Lot 356:
Description
A group of two Japanese porcelain dishes. The larger shallow bowl is decorated in underglaze blue with a design of large floral blooms, foliage, and butterflies, characteristic of Nabeshima or Arita ware. The reverse of the bowl is embellished with scrolling foliate sprays and five distinct spur marks within the foot ring, indicative of the firing process. The smaller circular plate features an all-over, dense pattern of flowers and butterflies executed in an iron-red palette. Both pieces are fashioned from white porcelain and exhibit characteristics consistent with 18th or 19th-century production.
