Description

This set of two volumes constitutes a commemorative pictorial record of the 1936 Olympic Games, published as cigarette card albums by the Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. Band I (Volume 1) covers the Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and a preview of the Berlin games, while Band II (Volume 2) documents the XI Olympic Games in Berlin. Both quarto-sized volumes are bound in bright blue publisher cloth featuring the title in black script and a gold-embossed Olympic bell emblem with the inscription Ich rufe die Jugend der Welt! (I call the youth of the world!). The interior contains numerous tipped-in black-and-white and color photographic prints (collectible cards) mounted within the text. Notable content includes extensive coverage of track and field events with multiple images of Jesse Owens and Helen Stephens. The volumes also feature various depictions of Nazi leadership, including a full-page portrait of Adolf Hitler and images of Hermann Goring. The title pages of both volumes display the Reich eagle with a swastika above the Olympic rings. The text is printed in German using a Fraktur-style typeface.
