Description

This set of six hand-colored lithographs depicts various branches and academic institutions of the French military during the Second Empire era, approximately 1852 to 1870. The works are identified by signatures in the stone as being by French artists Louis Lassalle and P. Duquet. The collection includes a plate titled Eccoles Militaires featuring students from the Ecole Polytechnique in a bicorne, the Ecole de Saint-Cyr in an infantry shako, and the Ecole de Saumur in a cavalry shako. Another plate, titled Eleve de Saint-Cyr, shows a student in full field uniform with a large backpack and traditional red trousers. The set also includes a depiction of the Sapeurs-Pompiers wearing characteristic brass helmets with tall combs, and an officer in a blue frock coat and kepi. These illustrations represent mid-19th-century French military fashion and document the transition of uniform styles during the reign of Napoleon III. Each lithograph is professionally matted in dark blue-grey and presented in a uniform black frame with a gold-colored inner bead under glass.
