Description
This is a large earthenware breakfast cup and saucer set manufactured by Burgess and Leigh Ltd in Burslem, England, under the Burleigh Ware brand. The set features the traditional Farmers Arms pattern, decorated with transfer-printed agricultural motifs and polychrome enamel highlights. The central design on both pieces displays nineteenth-century farming implements, including a plow, scythe, rake, and pitchfork, centered around a blue banner inscribed with the phrase GOD SPEED THE PLOUGH. The reverse of the cup includes a printed verse celebrating the life of the farmer, flanked by wheat sheaves and a ribbon reading INDUSTRY PRODUCETH WEALTH. The saucer depicts a pastoral scene with laborers, horses, cattle, and geese. Both pieces are finished with a gilt band at the rim. The cup features a flared rim and an ornate scroll handle. The base of the saucer is marked with the green transfer-printed Burleigh Ware beehive backstamp and the pattern name FARMERS ARMS.
