Description
This mid-century oil on canvas painting portrays a village street in Shaldon, near Teignmouth, Devon. The composition features a central figure of a man in dark attire with a walking stick, navigating a narrow lane between clustered, blocky buildings. The architecture is rendered with a mix of gabled roofs and flat-topped structures in a palette of pale ochre, blue, and gray, accented by deep, angular shadows that suggest a late afternoon sun. A mountain peak rises in the background under a cloudy sky. The artist employs a post-impressionist style with broad, visible brushstrokes and a muted, tonal color scheme. The work is signed Frederick Johnston in brown paint in the lower right corner. The reverse of the canvas board features a hand-drawn artist’s palette in black ink. Within the palette is the inscription Frederick Johnston / 107 Church Road / Little Heath / Potters Bar / Hertfordshire. To the left of the palette, the location is identified with the handwritten inscription Shaldon, near Teignmouth. The painting is presented in a triple-layered frame comprising a thin white inner molding, a wide cream linen-textured mat, and a dark brown wood outer frame.
