Description

A pair of 19th-century hand-colored aquatints on paper, each depicting an English hunting scene. The prints are part of a series after Dean Wolstenholme and were engraved by Thomas Sutherland. The top print, titled SHOOTING. PLATE III. Dogs brought the Game, & reloading, shows two hunters in red coats with three dogs in a valley landscape. The bottom print, titled SHOOTING. PLATE IV. Refreshing, depicts the same hunters resting under a large oak tree, with one hunter seated and another standing near their hounds.

Both prints feature printed inscriptions in the lower margins. The lower left of each reads Painted by D. Wolstenholme. The lower right reads Engraved by T. Sutherland. The lower center margin of both works includes the publisher information London, Published by R. ACKERMANN, 101 Strand, May 1, 1823, followed by the specific plate number and scene title. The aquatint technique is evident in the soft, tonal gradations of the landscapes, supplemented by fine hand-coloring in the figures’ coats and foliage. Distinct plate marks are visible surrounding each image. The works are presented in wide, matching figured wood frames with a gilt inner slip.
