Lot 331:
Description
Arthur Spencer Roberts (British, 1920-1997). This lot features two framed original works. The primary piece is a painting on board depicting a group of harvest mice among stalks of wheat, executed in a golden palette. The work is signed and dated SPENCER ROBERTS 1995 in the lower right corner. The second piece is a graphite study on paper containing multiple sketches of mice, identified by a reverse label as being from the artist sketchbook. The reverse of the painting includes a label for the title Harvest mice in Grain Field and an invitation to the 1998 retrospective exhibition Arthur Spencer Roberts 1920-97 at the Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. Both items bear handwritten provenance notes signed by the artist widow, dated January 8, 2003, which reference dates of 1970 and 1972 for the execution of related works. The painting is housed in a gilt-finished frame with a light-toned mat, and the study is presented in a black and gold frame with a dark mat.
