Description
This Regency-period oval portrait miniature depicts James Mantell (1770-1845), identified as a surgeon in the East Middlesex Militia. The work is rendered in watercolor on ivory and is attributed to William John Thomson (W. J. Thomson) based on the inscription on the reverse. The sitter is portrayed wearing a red military coat with a dark blue collar, a white cross-belt, and a gold-fringed epaulette. The miniature is set within a silver-toned metal frame featuring a top suspension loop. The reverse contains a glazed compartment holding a lock of dark hair, over which a later handwritten paper label is affixed. This label identifies the subject, provides biographical details, and notes certification by A.A. Mantell M.D., Surgeon Major Bengal Army.
