Description

An English School early 19th-century Georgian oval portrait miniature of a gentleman, identified by an internal label as The Rev. Richard William Yates. The sitter is depicted with white hair, wearing a dark coat and a white cravat. The work is executed in watercolor on ivory and is set within a gold-toned metal pendant frame. The reverse side features a glazed compartment containing decorative, two-tone woven hairwork in a geometric pattern, topped with a gold-wire cipher. A handwritten paper label visible through the rear glass identifies the subject: The Rev. Richard William Yates / died at the Elms / Solihull Jan 26 1805 / aged 42. A modern Bonhams auction label is also present on the reverse.
