Description

This maritime oil on canvas is attributed to the British painter John Wilson Carmichael, as the composition closely follows his known 1844 work titled A British Man-of-War off the Needles, Isle of Wight. The painting features a large, three-decked British ship of the line in the center foreground, meticulously detailed in its square rigging and naval architecture. The vessel is depicted from a three-quarter rear perspective, flying a British Red Ensign from the stern. A second man-of-war is visible in the middle ground to the left. The ships are set within a choppy sea with white-capped waves, under a broad, atmospheric sky with overcast clouds. In the lower right foreground, a solitary figure in dark attire stands on a stone jetty or pier. The painting is housed in a stepped, black-painted wooden frame with a gilded inner liner. No signature is visible on the front of the work.
