Description

A pair of large polychrome glazed earthenware figures, attributed to 19th-century Staffordshire production, depicting the characters Jobson and Nell, also known as The Cobbler and His Wife. The female figure, Nell, is seated wearing a white bonnet, a blue-green shawl over a red bodice, and a cream-colored skirt decorated with small floral motifs. She holds a white pitcher in her right hand and a small cup in her left. The male figure, Jobson, is depicted as a cobbler seated at his work. He wears a dark hat, a red vest over a white shirt, a black apron, and blue stockings. He is shown holding a shoe in the process of repair. Both figures are mounted on integral rectangular plinth bases featuring a molded and green-glazed surface to simulate grass. The figures are hollow-cast and finished with hand-painted details. No maker marks are present.
