Description

A large hand painted glazed earthenware pitcher manufactured by the Longpark Pottery in Torquay, Devon, England. This bulbous vessel features a wide body tapering to a narrow neck with a flared rim and a sturdy loop handle. The pitcher is decorated with a mottled or stippled light blue-grey ground. The hand painted ornamentation includes bold, stylized scrolling and spiral motifs on the central body, while the neck and base are encircled by geometric bands of chevron and floral patterns. The color palette consists of teal green, dark purple, ochre yellow, and red. The unglazed red clay base features black printed marks for Longpark Torquay England and lists managing directors Frederick Blackler and Robert Skinner. A hand painted inscription on the base reads HAND PAINTED BY W.G. HOWARD 1938.
