Lot 183:
Description
An Edwardian sterling silver pincushion produced by silversmith Lawrence Emanuel, dated 1904. The small, oval-shaped object features a solid sterling silver front face with an embossed texture imitating crocodile or alligator skin. The reverse side is finished with an inset panel of deep blue velvet designed to hold pins. It is equipped with a hinged, swivel-style hanging loop at the top for attachment to a chatelaine or neck chain. The front face bears a full set of English hallmarks: the maker mark L.E within a rectangular punch for Lawrence Emanuel, a vertical anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, a lion passant indicating .925 sterling silver purity, and a lowercase date letter e within a rectangular shield with clipped corners, corresponding to the year 1904. A partial hallmark is also struck on the hanging loop.
