Lot 184:
Description
This is a circular box featuring a sterling silver body and a tortoiseshell lid. The piece is attributed to the Birmingham firm G and A Ltd, known for high-quality silver-mounted tortoiseshell items. The lid is decorated with intricate silver pique inlay in a neoclassical style, featuring a central floral wreath suspended from a draped swag with ribbon bows, surmounted by a stylized urn motif and finished with foliate scrolls below. The silver base has a polished finish with a prominent stepped and molded foot. The side of the silver body bears a clear set of English hallmarks arranged vertically: an anchor assay mark for Birmingham, a lion passant standard mark indicating .925 sterling silver, and a lowercase date letter q for 1915. An oval cartouche contains the maker mark G and A.
