Description

This lot consists of a pair of official British campaign awards for service during the First World War. The pair includes the British War Medal 1914-1920 and the Victory Medal 1914-1919. The British War Medal is struck in silver and features the bareheaded effigy of King George V on the obverse, with the Latin inscription GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP: surrounding the portrait. The reverse depicts St. George on horseback trampling a shield of the Central Powers and a skull and crossbones, with the dates 1914 and 1918. It is attached to a ribbon with a wide orange center stripe flanked by white, black, and blue stripes. The Victory Medal is struck in bronze with a gold-toned finish. The obverse depicts a full-length winged figure of Victory. The reverse features a laurel wreath surrounding the text THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919. This medal is suspended from a double-rainbow pattern ribbon. These medals were standard issue for members of the British and Commonwealth forces. While standard issue medals were typically impressed with the recipient’s name, rank, and unit on the rim, those details are not legible in the provided images.
