Description

This lot consists of a pair of silver British campaign medals awarded for military service during the First World War era and subsequent operations on the Indian frontier. The first medal is a British War Medal 1914-1920, struck in silver. The obverse features the uncrowned profile of King George V with the circumscription GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:. The reverse depicts St. George on horseback trampling a Prussian eagle shield and a skull, with the dates 1914 and 1918. It is fitted with a period silk ribbon featuring a wide central orange stripe flanked by narrow white and blue stripes, and a straight non-swiveling bar suspension. The second medal is an India General Service Medal (1908-1935) in silver. The obverse displays the crowned bust of King George V in coronation robes with the circumscription GEORGIVS V KAISAR-I-HIND. The reverse shows Jamrud Fort at the entrance to the Khyber Pass with the word INDIA inscribed on a scroll at the base. This medal features a single silver clasp inscribed AFGHANISTAN N.W.F. 1919 and an ornate swiveling scroll-pattern suspension. The ribbon is green with a broad dark blue central stripe. Both medals are officially named on the edge.
