Lot 31:
Description
This ethnographic musical instrument is a Kundu drum, a traditional percussion instrument from Papua New Guinea. The drum is hand-carved from a single piece of dense, dark wood into a tall, slender form that flares slightly at the base. It features an integral handle carved into the side of the central section. The exterior is decorated with two circumferential bands of relief-carved geometric motifs, primarily consisting of alternating triangular patterns. The drum head is covered with a stretched lizard skin membrane, likely monitor lizard skin, which is secured to the wooden rim with multiple turns of hand-twisted natural fiber cordage. The wood exhibits a dark patina consistent with traditional finishing techniques and prolonged use.
Approx 1.16cm high
