Description

This late 19th or early 20th-century French canne a systeme or system cane is designed as a specialized florist’s or gardener’s tool for cutting flowers or fruit from a distance. The piece comprises a hollow outer sheath and a concealed inner mechanical assembly. The outer sheath is made of natural bamboo with a dark-stained finish. The inner mechanical shaft is a thinner bamboo rod topped with a dark, fluted bulbous knob handle made of wood or composition material. A metal sliding lever located just below the handle actuates the steel shear blades at the distal end of the rod. The metal slide bears the stamped marks DUBOIS. and BREVETE, identifying the French maker and patent status. The base of the cutting mechanism features a small stamped logo depicting a stylized crest or bird.
