Description

This collection features two distinct sets of miniature masks representing traditional Japanese and Chinese theatrical traditions. The first assembly consists of three Japanese masks mounted on a fan-shaped wooden or paper board. These miniature masks represent traditional figures including the smiling elder Okina with white tufted eyebrows, the female Okame or Otafuku character with prominent cheeks, and a red-faced Tengu or Shinto deity with a long nose and stylized white eyebrows. The masks are made of a painted material, likely ceramic or a composite, finished with a matte surface. The lower right corner of the fan mount bears a handwritten character in black ink and a red square artist seal. The second assembly consists of four Chinese Peking Opera masks (Lianpu) presented in a rectangular dark-stained wood shadowbox frame. These masks are hand-painted on porcelain or clay and represent specific historical and literary characters as identified by the labels: Yuwen Chengdu (yellow pattern), Cao Cao (red and black pattern), Zhang Fei (green and black pattern), and Yuan Shao (pink pattern). The masks are mounted against a tan woven fabric background. The display includes printed labels in both Chinese and English identifying the collection as Types of Facial Make-up in Chinese Opera.
