Description
An antique British Railways (Eastern Region) three-aspect signaling hand lamp constructed of black-painted metal. The lantern features a cylindrical body with a conical top surmounted by a bail handle, and a fixed vertical handle is attached to the rear. A brass identification plate riveted to the side is inscribed with the characters B.R.(E) / FLEDBOROUGH / E R G C, identifying its historical use at Fledborough railway station. The front of the lamp houses a large clear convex glass lens secured by a brass rim. The interior contains a rotating cylinder mechanism fitted with red and blue glass filters to change the signal aspect. The internal oil burner assembly is present and bears the manufacturer mark SHERWOODS BIRMINGHAM.
