Lot 46:
Description
A large-scale American folk art wall sculpture depicting a Northern Pike (Esox lucius). The piece is constructed from multiple pieces of formed sheet metal to create a three-dimensional, hollow body. The dorsal, pelvic, pectoral, and anal fins, as well as the tail, are separate components attached to the main body with visible rivets. The fins feature stamped ribbing to simulate rays. The entire sculpture is finished with hand-painted details including a cream-to-green-to-dark-blue gradient and distinctive light-colored spots along the body. The head is detailed with an open mouth revealing serrated teeth and an inset glass or painted eye. A metal hanging wire is attached to a loop on the upper dorsal area for wall mounting. Such pieces are traditionally associated with the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest regions, often serving as trade signs for sporting goods stores or decorative elements for fishing lodges and taverns.
