Lot 126:
Description
This antique rotary desk telephone was produced by the Bell Telephone Manufacturing Company, the Antwerp, Belgium-based subsidiary of Western Electric. Known as an Antwerp or Continental-style cradle phone, the unit features a heavy metal base with a black finish. The sides of the base are decorated with ornate, gold-toned scrollwork and filigree patterns. On the left side of the base, vertical text integrated into the decorative border identifies the maker as BELL TELEPHONE MFG COMPANY. The handset is made of black bakelite or a similar early hard plastic and rests on a high, two-pronged metal cradle. The rotary dial consists of a clear plastic finger wheel over a white numeric plate, with a stationary inner ring of numbers. The handset is attached to the base via a brown braided cloth cord. The unit has been modified for modern use with a white plastic-jacketed line cord.
