Lot 127:
Description
This lot consists of two antique printed commemorative textile items.
The first item is a World War I souvenir handkerchief, dating circa 1914 to 1917, printed on a cream-colored woven fabric, likely cotton or a linen blend. The design is organized into four quadrants representing the primary Allied nations during the early years of the conflict. The top left section is dedicated to France, featuring the title The Marseillaise and a portrait of President Raymond Poincare. The top right section features Russia with the title God Save Our Noble Tsar and a portrait of Tsar Nicholas II. The bottom left represents the United Kingdom with God Save The King and a portrait of King George V. The bottom right features Belgium with La Brabanconne and a portrait of King Albert I. Each quadrant includes the respective national flag, heraldic crests, and the musical notation and lyrics for the national anthems.
The second item is a Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee commemorative handkerchief, produced circa 1897 to celebrate her long reign. It is printed in monochrome on white cotton fabric featuring a subtle checkered windowpane weave. The central motif is a large seated portrait titled Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, with text indicating it was reproduced from a photograph by Bassano. The upper portion includes portraits of the Queen at the time of her accession and at age 18, alongside Prince Albert. Surrounding medallions feature portraits of royal family members, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of York, and a baby Prince Edward. The corners and sides contain comparative illustrations depicting progress during the Victorian era, such as Old London vs. Modern London, stagecoaches vs. motor cars, and the Old Revenge vs. the Present Revenge naval ships.
