Description
This carved shell cameo brooch is set within an oval yellow metal frame. The shell features a relief carving in white against a carnelian-colored ground, depicting a seated woman in classical attire. She is shown in profile, positioned at a balustrade or desk and writing with a quill. The composition includes decorative elements such as a draped curtain to the left, a trellis pattern below the writing surface, and a suggestion of trees in the background. The mount is constructed with a double-rope twist border. The reverse of the brooch is fitted with a horizontal metal pin and a C-clasp mechanism. A safety chain is attached to the side of the frame, terminating in a small gold-tone safety pin. On the reverse edge of the frame, there is a small rectangular impressed mark containing the characters 9, C, and t, indicating the mount is 9 karat gold.
