Lot 134:
Description
This large, dual-function jewelry piece serves as both a pendant and a brooch. The central focus is a hand-carved shell cameo depicting an allegorical scene of the Three Graces in high relief against a brownish-tan ground. The three female figures are portrayed in classical drapery, captured in a dancing pose with interconnected arms. The cameo is secured within a heavy, ornate 18 karat yellow gold frame featuring intricate openwork filigree and granulated decorative borders.
The reverse of the piece is equipped with a long brooch pin featuring a revolving safety clasp. A large, decorative pendant bale is attached to the top by a hinge, allowing it to fold down when the piece is worn as a brooch. The back of the shell bears an incised signature in script that reads Sfajo followed by a flourish. A hallmark is stamped into the side of the pendant bale; it consists of a small incised mark within a lozenge-shaped cartouche containing an illegible symbol or profile.
Height (excluding bale): 2 1/8 inches (5.5 cm).
