Lot 151:
Description
A sterling silver novelty table lighter modeled in the form of a hunting horn. The piece features a trumpet-shaped body with a weighted circular base and a flared nozzle. A length of fiber wick is present within the upper aperture. The body of the horn bears a series of impressed marks in a horizontal line: an oval cartouche containing the uppercase initials GW, a lion passant facing left, a vertical anchor, a Roman capital letter N in a shield-shaped cartouche, and a right-facing profile of a sovereign’s head in a circular cartouche. The initials GW are repeated in an oval cartouche on the underside of the base, positioned above a separate lion passant mark. The nozzle section repeats three of these marks: the letter N, the anchor, and the lion passant. The lion passant identifies the material as .925 sterling silver, while the anchor indicates the Birmingham Assay Office. The Roman capital N corresponds to a 1912 date mark for the Birmingham office.
