Description
An 18th century Indo-Persian pandan or betel nut box of octagonal form, constructed from a brass copper alloy. The piece features a stepped, domed lid and is decorated throughout with chased and engraved foliate and geometric borders. Bands of pierced diamond-shaped jali perforations are present across the base and the lid. The box is equipped with a hinged lid, a swing-top carrying handle, and a large decorative front latch and hasp. The interior shows evidence of manual hammered construction.
