Lot 253:
Description
This Queen Anne period ( 1702 – 1714) walnut chest on stand, also known as a highboy, is constructed in two sections. The piece features figured walnut and burr walnut veneers accented by walnut cross-banding and herringbone stringing. The upper section consists of a molded cornice above two short drawers and three long, graduated drawers. A distinctive eight-pointed mariner’s or compass star is inlaid into the top surface of the case in contrasting woods. The upper chest sits within a waist molding atop the lower stand. The stand features a frieze of three drawers over a decoratively arched and scrolled apron. The entire piece is supported by four cabriole legs terminating in rounded pad feet. The hardware consists of brass drop-ring pulls on batwing backplates and pierced brass escutcheons.
