Lot 257:
Description
This lot consists of two hand-carved decorative items of diverse cultural origin. The first is a hardwood stool characteristic of Ghanaian Ashanti craftsmanship. It features a rectangular concave seat platform with flared, upturned ends, decorated with incised geometric motifs including repeating triangular borders and a central eight-pointed starburst. The seat is supported by a flared central pedestal with a visible interlocking jagged join, resting on a tiered rectangular base with further geometric carving. The stool is finished with a dark stain. The second item is a Chinese carved hardstone headrest or pillow, fashioned from a mottled green and russet stone such as nephrite or serpentine. The hollowed rectangular form features rounded corners and open ends. The top surface is decorated with intricate pierced openwork carving, highlighting a central stylized Shou (longevity) character flanked by scrolling foliate and floral designs. The rounded ends are further embellished with carved flower blossoms.
