Lot 26:
Description
This lot features three decorative ethnographic items: a ceremonial metal pole-arm and a pair of carved wooden knives. The pole-arm is designed in the style of an Indian zaghnal battle axe, featuring a forged metal head with a forward-curving, scythe-like blade, a vertical top spike, and a small cast elephant figurine at the rear. Two smaller quadruped animal figurines are mounted at the base of the blade. The head is fitted to a long metal shaft that terminates in a flared, circular pommel. The pair of decorative knives are each hand-carved from a single piece of dark-stained hardwood. The handles are carved in the round in the form of elephants, while the blades feature decorative chip-carving and geometric borders. Both wooden blades are incised with the word MALAWI in vertical block letters.
