Description

A Victorian-period Sikes’s hydrometer set manufactured by William Robert Loftus of London. The instrument is housed in a rectangular mahogany case featuring light wood stringing inlay on the lid and a central cartouche-shaped plaque. The interior is fitted with purple velvet and satin lining. The set includes a polished brass hydrometer float with a graduated rectangular stem, a set of nine circular brass weights with attachment slots, a small square brass cap weight, a brass slide rule with multiple scales including a PROOF scale, and a thermometer mounted on a boxwood scale with a glass tube. The case plaque is engraved SIKESS HYDROMETER / LOFTUS / 6 BEAUFOY TERRACE / LONDON. The slide rule and thermometer are both stamped LOFTUS LONDON. Several circular weights are stamped with the serial number 15816 and denominations ranging from 10 to 90.
