Lot 41:
Description
This mid-nineteenth-century drawing is a portrait study of an elderly woman, modeled after a well-known work by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830). The work is executed in charcoal, graphite, and white chalk on toned paper. The subject, identified by visual similarity to Lawrence portrait of his mother, Lucy Lawrence, is depicted wearing a ruffled collar and a lace bonnet with white chalk highlights used to suggest the texture of the fabric. Inscribed on the lower left edge Lawrence 1838. A vertical inscription on the right margin reads 25 Nov 1860. The drawing is presented in an oval gilt-finished frame featuring a rope-twist border and a decorative ribbon-knot crest. The piece is set behind an oval mat.
