Lot 225:
Description
A Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase of ovoid form, decorated with two large reserves against a cobalt blue ground embellished with gilt floral and scrollwork patterns. One panel depicts two figures in elaborate robes detailed with raised gold moriage, while the opposing panel shows a flowering cherry blossom tree. The base bears a hand-painted mark consisting of a circle containing a cross above two columns of characters reading 金光山 and 浅野造, identifying the piece as being from the Kinkozan studio and made by Asano. A small dark mark is also present on the unglazed foot ring (Photo 2). Accompanying the vase is a small cylindrical porcelain spill vase featuring a green-painted rim and a polychrome floral motif (Photo 1).
