Description
A hand-carved soapstone figure depicting a wrathful mythological character, possibly a temple guardian or luohan. The piece is executed in high relief with extensive pierced openwork, creating significant depth and movement. The carver has utilized the natural color zoning of the stone, positioning the central figure within the warm, reddish-orange translucent portion, while the surrounding stylized clouds and rocky base are carved from the darker gray and black sections of the same block. The figure is shown with a powerful, muscular physique, a fierce facial expression, bulging eyes, and traditional garments. The reverse of the carving follows the general silhouette of the front but features simplified decorative details and tool marks consistent with hand construction. A thorough examination of the images shows no maker’s marks, signatures, reign marks, or labels on the base or body of the figure.
