Description

A British military prismatic service compass of the Verner Pattern VII, dated 1917. The compass features a weighted brass housing with a darkened bronze finish. The hinged lid is fitted with a circular glass window and a vertical sighting hairline. The interior houses a floating dial with a black center and a secondary graduated scale. A flip-up prism is mounted opposite the lid to facilitate taking bearings while simultaneously viewing the dial. The side of the brass casing includes a manual transit lock and a revolving ring with further degree graduations. A large brass thumb ring is attached to the base.

The exterior of the lid is engraved in capital letters with VERNERS PATTERN and VII. The base of the instrument is impressed with a broad arrow or pheon symbol, the manufacturer initials F-L, a serial number NO 78732, and the date 1917. The compass is accompanied by a heavy stitched brown leather case featuring a brass buckle closure and a belt loop on the reverse.
