Description
A British sterling silver horticultural award medal presented by Ryder & Son (1920) Ltd of St. Albans. The obverse features a central heraldic shield containing a saltire on a field of horizontal lines, surrounded by a decorative foliate border of roses and leaves. The circular legend reads PRESENTED BY RYDER & SON (1920) LTD • SEED SPECIALISTS ST ALBANS. Small impressed text at the base of the central design reads VAUGHTON BIRM. The reverse is plain and unengraved.
The reverse base bears a series of impressed marks. A maker’s mark consisting of the characters V&S in a rectangular cartouche for Vaughton & Sons is followed by three hallmark symbols: an anchor indicating the Birmingham assay office, a lion passant representing sterling silver (.925 fineness) and date letter.
The medal is housed in its original square, blue velvet-lined presentation case. Affixed to the inner lid of the case is a partial, aged newspaper clipping titled A Fine Fruit Record. The text describes the horticultural successes of a Mr. J. H. P. Camm of Stonehouse, specifically mentioning his Belle de Louvain plums and his aggregate points in fruit classes over a six-year period.
