Lot 277:
Description
This lot features a set of four framed stipple engravings with hand-coloring, part of the well-known series Cries of London. The scenes illustrate various street vendors in 18th-century London settings. The four included titles are: Turnips & Carrots ho (Plate 13), Two bunches a penny primroses (Plate 1), Round & Sound Five pence a Pound Duke Cherries (Plate 8), and Do you want any Matches? (Plate 4). Each print features a central image surrounded by a border containing the title in English and French. Centered below the titles is the series name CRIES of LONDON. The bottom left of the sheets bears the printed credit Painted by F. Wheatley R.A. and the bottom right indicates the engraver, including Engraved by A. Cardon and other associated artists. These works are produced using the stipple engraving technique, which uses small dots to create tonal variations and soft gradations, further enhanced by hand-applied watercolor. Distinct plate marks from the printing process are visible on the paper. The prints are presented in matching black frames with a gilded rope-twist inner molding.
